Lectures on Miscellaneous Topics

Listed below are some of the lectures I offer on miscellaneous topics related to Christianity, the Bible, and church history.

Most lectures can be turned into a lecture series if so requested.

Basics of Christianity

In this lecture, we look at the various traditions within Christianity – Orthodox, Catholic, and Protestant – to learn about some of their basic differences and similarities in belief and worship. We cover the historical events that formed these different traditions and discover our shared history, too.

Early Heresies about Jesus

This lecture looks at some of the major early heresies (false teachings) about Jesus. We explore the important role heresies play in the development of doctrine and learn the basics regarding classical orthodox Christian affirmations about Christ. We also consider the implications of various heresies and the arguments against them, particularly for our own understanding and application today.

Esther

Depending on your interest, this lecture will discuss any of the following issues related to Esther: responses to life under foreign rule (with Daniel and Joseph parallels); contrasts with Ezra-Nehemiah and a lack of longing for the Holy Land; Esther as a critique of annihilation and genocide; the additions to Esther and theological concerns; the additions to Esther and identity issues.

Spiritual Disciplines

In this lecture, we'll examine Christian spiritual disciplines, both familiar and less familiar. We'll consider the reasons behind spiritual disciplines,  check out biblical precedents, and ask about the goals of the disciplines.

Basics of the Protestant World

Though we can't cover all denominations or non-denominational churches, in this lecture, we explore the variety of branches within the Protestant world. We consider some of the key beliefs (doctrines) that divide people, and we discuss some of the historic and geographical factors that shaped each branch.

Images of Jesus in Early Christian Art

What did Jesus look like? What are some of the earliest depictions of Jesus, and what do they tell us about him? In this lecture, we’ll look at some early images and discuss how theology and art intersected, particularly in the ways early Christian art relied on current artistic ideas to evangelize and disciple people. This lecture will also include a glance through the centuries – including the present – at popular depictions of Jesus to help us learn to ask about the theological ideas that shape our image of Jesus.

Ancestors in the Faith

Church history is full of women and men who followed Jesus faithfully. For this lecture or lecture series, I’ll provide a list of categories from which you can choose, then I’ll introduce you to some people in your chosen categories whose stories might intrigue, encourage, and inspire you and your group.

Other topics: Your choice

Because the descriptions listed in this document do not encompass everything I can offer as a lecture or lecture series, please feel free to let me know if there is another topic your group would like covered. If you have a specific group, event, text, or topic in mind, contact me to discover how we might work together to create a lecture tailored to your needs.
